Cool Junk

My "cool junk" tag isn't actually for things I think are junk, it's stuff I buy or discover second hand. Here are two fantastic recent finds.

Cat in the Basket

I've been looking for an alternative to a plastic laundry basket for a while, and this oddly-shaped hamper caught my eye. I'll be making a lining for it soon.

I'm usually not an impulse shopper, but this was just irresistible! I'll make good use of it as part of my craft show display to hold smaller quilted pins and magnets.

I Bought a Tiny Shopping Cart!

Until then, it's holding fruit on the kitchen counter!

Antimacassars

I learned a new word! Antimacassars are the things that go on the backs and arms of chairs to protect the upholstery from wear. Macassar was an oil-based hair product popular in the 19th century.

 Crochet Antimacassar

These were crocheted in the 1930s or '40s. I'm looking forward to incorporating them into quilts.

Pegasus Sketch

Another fun colored pencil sketch. Nothing fancy and certainly not sophisticated.

Eiffel Tower Art Quilt

This was a custom piece for a woman who loves pink and the Eiffel Tower. It was a lot of fun to make!

Eiffel Tower Art Quilt

20" x 24". Machine appliqued cotton, cotton batting. 2013.

I like working for other people because they have different ideas that bring me to places I wouldn't otherwise go on my own. I used some of the techniques picked up in the ribbon quilt here too. It wasn't quite large enough to really do the two-sided ribbon thing, but that's something sweet to file away for the future.

Blue Baby Hat

For Mom's coworker's newborn. I love this pattern-- in worsted weight, the smallest size took less than an afternoon to finish. And it's so cute

Blue Aviatrix Hat

Of course, I don't have access to a baby, so the cat has to model...

Cat Models Baby Hat

Is it sleepiness or is it utter contempt on his little face? Either way, no animals were harmed in the making of this photograph: after I took the hat off, Buckaroo rolled over and went back to sleep. The trick is to put the hat on him while he's asleep, get the photo, and take the hat off before he really knows what's going on.

Undergrowth Sketch

Caught in the Garden was popular at the craft show so I think I'll do a few more quilts like it.

Undergrowth Sketch

This yellow guy eats at the roots of bushes, I think. He belongs on a coat of arms.

Everyday Trophy Quilt

Sometimes, it feels like you deserve a trophy just for doing everything you're supposed to do.

Here's my solution.

Everyday trophy art quilt

There are thread loops on either side of the banner so you can change out the achievement as much as you'd like!

It's always nice to put something positive on the first page of a new sketchbook.

Two Cat Sketches

Work means there's less time for art, but I am committed to keeping up with my blog in one way or another. Here are two (more or less) happy cats I sketched recently.

Let's just hope Crab Cat one likes water.

You're Nothing But The Truth

Quite a compliment. I'm not sure exactly what he meant by it, but I liked it.

You're Nothing But The Truth

This will make one heck of a quilt someday. How much shiny stuff can I fit onto it?

Sky Scarf Update

Happy 2013! The sky scarf continues (I can't can't CAN'T wait until I get to finish it, but that's another story) and I've marked the new year with a few strands not woven in, like the day moved away from Ohio.

Recent sky scarf

I'm clipping and weaving in the ends as necessary because carrying all 12 strands along as I go would be a total mess. I'm staying on top of it, tough, and haven't had a problem.

Sky scarf as of 1/1/13

Among the commitments I'm keeping during this sky scarf period of time, weaving in all these ends is easy.

 Knitting basket

Plus, I have a nice little basket.
