Taking a Winter Break

See you in January!

In the meantime, here are some fun things:

The British Library has over ONE MILLION public domain photos and illustrations on their Flickr page.

You can help the Smithsonian Institution (my #1 favorite institution) without spending any money or even putting on real pants by being a digital transcription volunteer.  I think I'm gonna learn a lot about birds by transcribing field notes.

And this pretty fella. I have a whole board on Pinterest for brown tabbies. Nothing to be ashamed of.

Quick Cable Hat

Holiday knitting continues! This pattern is from Stephanie Pearl-McPhee and it's good TV knitting, at least the way I watch tv.

"Lamia" Monster Art Quilt

Lamia art quilt face detail

I'm working on a series of quilts inspired by the woodcut illustrations in Edward Topsell's 1607 book, Historie of Foure-Footed Beastes. I've put the whole quilt and the woodcut under the break because the Lamia is a beast with the legs of a bear and goat, the body of a dragon, and the face and breasts of a woman. So, you've been warned: quilty boobs.

Lamia Art Quilt Detail

More monsters. The trouble with blogging in the winter is that by the time I remember it's time to make a post, it's often too dark to take a good big photo of an entire quilt. This is a problem that is entirely within my control. There are full quilts to be shared, I promise, and lots of holiday knitting.

The Lamia Quilt Detail

The Lamia is a sad monster in my opinion, and gendered as female in the text I've been reading as the Manticore is gendered as male.

Power Animal Quilt Detail

I finished this quilt a while back and haven't posted it because I wasn't sure if I wanted to go back and do more work, maybe by hand. Scales? Sound lines? Smell lines?

I still haven't decided if it's really 'done', but I'm in the mood for a little more Power Animal and a little less December right now.

Capsule Wardrobe for a Vacation: Home for the Holidays

Don't forget your novelty socks!

Entrelac Head Wrap- Finished

I'm happy with how it turned out-- I had about 2 yards of yarn left! It lost a lot of color (A LOT) as I washed and blocked it, but I like the mellower look. Most of the green washed out which moves it farther away from the Joker color scheme.

My Nerdy Quest is Finished!

So you might remember how I've been looking for the earliest-set historical paperback romance novel? My previous winner had been early Roman Britain, and the far (FAR) third place was a nonsensical Viking Warrio/Ancient Egpytian Princess combo. But this... This is the true winner.

They're set 10,000 years in the past and they are definitely romances.

My quest for the earliest paperback romance novel is OVER

And it's a series so there are MORE. I guess I do still have something to look for in used book stores. I was disappointed to think my fun quest would be over. I'm still looking for more Greeks and Romans, anyway.

Big Week! (NaNoWriMo Day 15)

Lots going on and I haven't gotten my wheels underneath me enough to make a post about it. There was the show last weekend...

DeFrance Antiques' Craft Show

...I reworked a favorite quilt for a new show opening tonight...

  My Cat's a Jerk
(The cat was the opposite of a big help. He is sitting on my hand WHILE I AM HOLDING A NEEDLE.)

... and I've almost finished my novel for NaNoWriMo in the meantime! Today, I'm only 5k words away, which is pretty exciting.

More photos and news coming soon, and hopefully I'll be back in the studio sewing next week!

Mermaids Part 2

Here are the other two mermaids in the batch.

Pet Fish

"Pet Fish" 8" x 13" Machine appliqued cotton, polyester batting. I really like that koi print.

"Bubbles" 13" x 16" Machine appliqued cotton, polyester batting. More fun with backgrounds.

Mermaids, Part 1

Had a lot of fun making these mermaid quilts for my upcoming art show this Saturday. I tried a new method of fusing all the parts down at one time and then doing all of the quilting in one go. It works well for small pieces, especially if I'm working on a deadline.

Mermaid Combs Her Hair

"Mermaid Combs Her Hair" 11" x 12" Machine appliqued cotton, polyester batting.

  Mermaid Friends

"Mermaid Friends" 10" x 15" Machine-appliqued cotton, polyester batting. I am really, really happy with the quilting on the background on this one. The spirals were so much fun!

NaNoWriMo: Day 1

Happy November! Time to write 50,000 words in 30 days. My profile is up on, I'm already dreaming about book covers and weird words, and I have no idea what I'm doing.

This book, that I dreamed up, is about a crocodile detective. On the cover, he was rifling through a large desk looking for crocodocuments. My third novel doesn't have to be good, it just has to be written.

Blog Feature

Today is a big day for me-- my work has been featured on Mr. X Stitch!

"Allison’s quilts are a great example of how much fun quilts can be. Jam-packed with humour and vibrancy, they are cleverly constructed and yet accessible. I’m no quilter, but Allison’s pieces make me want to try. They bring a smile to my face and I can only encourage you to visit Allison’s website and enjoy her portfolio of work."

I'm honored to be featured on this blog, which I've followed for years.

A Very Harry Halloween Part 1

Threw my Halloween party last weekend. There was quidditch-style beer pong and a crying ghost in the bathroom. More pictures to come!

Neon Thread!

What other color could an Anxiety Dragon's blood possibly be??

Anxiety-time isn't fun, but when I get my head on straight in the middle of it, the art's pretty interesting.

Dream: Roly Poly Cat Fight

I can't wait to make this into a quilt.

Dream: Roly Poly Housecat Fight

"Two cats- housecats, fat ones- fighting on a fire escape on a skyscraper. One of them eventually pushed the other off. I don't know how far it fell. One was a calico, like Meeko, the other might have been a tabby. They were both very clean. It wasn't supposed to be such a serious fight. Roly-poly."

Sketchbook Sampler

Sketchbook Crest

Crests are fun. I was playing around with images from a Dover book "1,100 Designs and Motifs from Historic Sources".

  Muscle Tissue/Machine Quilting

I've also come across an anatomy coloring book, and I was inspired by the different textures of muscle and it made me think about machine quilting patterns.

Mardi Gras Angel

Another $10 antique store find. Not sure where it came from- no signature or even hanging hardware- but it drew me in. I am pretty sure it's a Mardi Gras parade (the men in masks are throwing besds. The woman looks so epic.

I think it will be most effective when hung above eye level.

Machine Quilting Practice

Maybe these will turn into a quilt-as-you-go blanket. Even if they don't, it's good practice.

Embellished Halloween Shirt

Making a Halloween shirt for the shop. Nothing says Halloween like a cauldron and a little Shakespeare!

And a couple candy corns for good measure.

Gallery Space!

I've rented some gallery space in town at Daffodils on Jonquil. This is the first time I've had my work in a permanent space, and I'm really excited.

My Work in a Store!

This is layout #2, because the first way of setting it up didn't work right. It was a long afternoon, but worth it.

Staghorn Hat

It's time for holiday knitting! Finished a hat this week. It's the Staghorn Hat from Knitting Old School.

Staghorn Hat

I liked trying the i-cord cast on (which was new for me), but wasn't thrilled with the results. The finished product looks good, which is what counts.

"Houseboats" Art Quilt

"Houseboats" 67" x 29". Machine appliquéd cotton, plastic, polyester batting. 2013.

This is the largest appliqué quilt I have made. It's based on a landscape I saw a while back in a dream and now lives above the red couch.

This past Friday, I shared a booth with the talented Alice Noyes at Fort Walton Beach's September Art Walk. It was my first outdoor show and quite a learning experience.

"Makarios" Art Quilt

"Makarios" Art Quilt

A custom art quilt for a friend. His favorite Greek word is 'makarios' which means 'blessed'.

"Makarios" Art Quilt Detail

We sang together in college, including the beautiful chant "Ave Maris Stella". I included the star print for the border to add to the 'stella' of it all.

Machine appliqued cotton, polyester batting. 20" x 20".

"You Are Here" Art Quilt

Machine applique, hand embroidery, cotton. 10" x 8"

"You Are Here" art quilt

Hands are a map of our past, our present, and our future. I used machine appliqué and hand embroidery as I meditated on the lines and stories in my own hand. I included the phrase "You Are Here", a staple of helpful maps everywhere, as a reminder to live in the present.

Updated Website

Hi, all! In addition to a blog, I have a professional portfolio website:

It's just been reorganized and updated with a few new quilts that haven't made it to my blog yet! Many of the quilts are for sale and if you're thinking about ordering something custom for the holidays, this is the time to drop me a line!
