Brown Linen Breeches

1770s Breeches

After two mock ups (one of which was hilarious) and two months of idleness, I'm almost done with my linen breeches. It's assembled by machine but finished by hand and that includes all the buttonholes. (Twelve down, two to go.) My eyes are tired, no surprise.

Elephant Bear Mouse

This was in my sketchbook in my dream. I've recreated it as best I can now that I'm awake.

ElephantBearMouse

Maybe it was smaller, or the wheat color was actually pinker and more beige. Maybe the lines were clearer, and there was a pig face in there somewhere that I couldn't capture this time...

Forest Guide

Forest Guide

9.5" x 13". Machine appliqued cotton. 2012. I was inspired by Terri Stegmiller's tutorial in Art Quilting Studio's Winter 2012 issue for this background. It reminded me of dreams, how the details get blurred but the location is still clear.

The shape of the quilt itself expands on the shape of the mysterious door. I didn't have any trouble binding it because I cut the tape on a bias.

Color Choices

I'm having an off day, creatively. Instead of making the wrong a poor choice, I took a few pictures to try some different combinations out. Photos are great-- I realized looking at them that I need more dark shades to make my rodent 'pop', among other things.

I've made the images smaller to get a better view of the whole composition. The stripes on the side would be the leaves of wreaths similar to the one in this quilt.

Mom's Knitted Ipod Case

Mom's ipod holder (open)

I made the pattern up as I went along, as you can see. There's room for the Nano and the earbuds and it's large and bright enough that the whole thing won't get lost in her giant purse.

We call her purse 'The Abyss'.

Car Alarm

Car Alarm

This monster ate a car. The alarm went off too late and now she's stuck with a noisy stomach.

 Car Alarm (detail)

This image came to me as a car alarm woke me up at two in the morning before a job interview.

Stupid Crochet...

I should have known that an "Experienced" pattern was a bad idea for my first crochet pattern. I got pretty far, but I'm in way over my head.

 Cowl, Before Abandoning

I'd rather blame myself than blame the pattern...but I really want to blame the pattern, too.

In better news, I came home from the library today with three books on advanced quilting techniques, two books on cat behavior, and one audiobook with the word 'unicorn' in the title.

Gray Earwarmer Headband

My ears aren't cold anymore and this only took two episodes of Downton Abbey to knit. All in all, a great project.

My Ears Aren't Cold

I liked the pattern (Blue Leaf Headband by Adrienne Krey on Ravelry) but was too impatient to figure out the (asymmetrical?) lace pattern.

Also, the super-short haircut happened. That's why I'm making stuff to keep my head warm.

Monsters

Small Monsters

9.5″ x 11.5″, Machine applique cotton quilt, 2012.

Two monsters from a dream last week. It was one of those pursuit dreams but Fix and I were safe at a party with our friends in a tall building.

Small Monsters (Detail)

There's a vagueness to them that I like.

In a War Someone Has to Die

I wanted to be part of Hanne Bang's collaborative art piece.

In a war someone has to die

The handkerchief was embroidered by the great aunt of a friend. She was an amazing craftswoman who crocheted the border many years ago. I never knew her, but I think of her often when I see her work.

Parachute Cat

Parachute

You might remember that my cat took a fall a couple weeks ago. It turns out that he broke a toe, which means I've got to keep him from running or jumping for the next few weeks. Easier said than done.

Parachute (detail)

The cat with a parachute has been on my mind for a while. I like his expression.

Grandma's Walker Bag

My grandma is starting to use a walker so I made her a tote bag that will fit on the front. I made the pattern myself based on what Mom told me she'd need. I used the only purple pre-quilted fabric that JoAnn had and did the rest of the applique and construction myself.

Grandma's Walker Bag (front)

There's a pocket on the outside facing her for her cell phone which she is encouraged to have on her at all times and of course a message from me and the rest of the grandkids.

"We love you Grandma"
