Hellooo, Beautiful

It's not steampunk yet, but I've got plans.

The Back

Not sure how the light-up skirt is going to work, but I'm experimenting. One thing I like about this project is how organically it's developing.

Mama's Boy

Visiting my parents this weekend. They have two cats: Boris and Natasha.

Here's the mama's boy himself helping me out with the internet. Actually, he's hoping to nurse on my elbow. It's not working out well for him so far.

The picture in Wednesday's post was a pretty accurate depiction of the range of color for my iridescent  Bitchin' Steampunk Dress. When it's not shifting in white morning light, however, it "reads" as puce.

Like puce, but better.

From bright teal to a dusty rose.
When Diary of a Mantua Maker talked about the color pink, she included a great anecdote about the origin of puce and its subsequent popularity. The more you know! I wonder what part of the flea this color would be?

It's The Simple Things... RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER.
Lined Sleeves
But it's okay: I didn't lose my temper and third time's a charm and don't they look lovely.

Coming up Friday: Let's talk about puce!

Gryffindor Complex Socks

Turns out that "Gryffindor Complex" is not a general Harry Potter fandom term, so I guess my BFF and I made it up on our own in high school.

Yarn Up Close

Anyway, a Gryffindor Complex is the tendancy to charge into a dangerous or fragile situation with good intentions, plenty of bravery, and only a sketch of a plan, like H.P. & Co. did. When the plan didn't work out, they were always surprised and indignant, as if to protest to the world: "But I'm a Gryffindor!" It's similar to having a White Knight thing going on, but without condescending to your object of heroism.

These are for a friend who has a Gryffindor Complex. He did something very brave-- and it was the right thing to do-- and it didn't work out like it should have. He was on the phone with me very late at night (or very early in the morning if you want to be specific) just trying to process the very bad night and the injustice of it all and it made me think of "But I'm a Gryffindor!"

I wouldn't have him any other way. I had the yarn and I wanted to make him socks, so these are going to be a testament to his bravery, his good heart, and his belief in doing the right thing even when it's not the easy thing.

Socks... Eventually

Night Sky Petticoat

So far, so good. I'm waiting to hem it until later when I have a better idea of the outfit as a whole I am not totally chicken. Haven't started experimenting with the little lights yet (they're adorable and suggested uses are mostly in floral arrangements-- neat!) but I have cut the shiny fabric for the jacket... but more on that later.
The sketch for the skirt (which I made with my own pattern) is here.

Petticoat and Jacket Mock-Up

Maybe my next project I should be able to dress myself. That would save some time.

Starry Skirt Plans

Pencil is the base skirt, the blue is for the as-yet-designed fluffy, bustley overskirt, and the red is for the electrical parts.

Starry Skirt Sketches

Depending on the color of the dress, I may use dark blue velvet for the night sky, but I already have the black...

Jacket Mockup

Mockup of Jacket

How impressive this looks < How proud I feel about this.

Mockup of Jacket, Front

Now the hard part: fitting it on myself with Fix's help. In the time he's been with me, he's acquired a great sewing vocabulary, but this is going to be a while new challenge.

Bustle With Ruffles

My crafting habits have changed recently. With one large project (and a pair of socks that haven't gotten interesting yet), I find myself with less to post on an ambitious thrice-weekly schedule. Never fear, I'm still around and still working hard. I've got a muslin mockup of the jacket in progress and plans for a super-special skirt that lights up...
